Garage Floor Crack? Three Checks Before You Decide What to Do About It
Measure it, check it for offset, then watch it for a season - the crack itself will tell you which category it's in.
Almost every concrete garage floor in Lake County has a crack somewhere, and the overwhelming majority of them are nothing to lose sleep over. The trouble is that "crack in the garage floor" covers everything from a harmless shrinkage line to a sign that the ground underneath is moving, and a photo alone rarely tells you which one you have. Run the three checks below before you decide whether it needs a bead of filler or a professional visit.

Check 1: Measure the width
A dime is a little under 1/16 inch thick and a nickel is a little over. Slide one into the crack: if a dime disappears easily but a nickel does not fit, you are roughly in the harmless hairline range - under 1/8 inch. If a quarter (about 1/16 inch shy of 1/4 inch) slides in with room to spare, you are past the point where a general rule covers you, and it is worth a second look at what is causing it.
Check 2: Feel for offset
Run your palm flat across the crack, not just your eyes. A crack that is level on both sides - your hand glides straight across - is behaving the way shrinkage and seasonal movement behave. A crack where you can feel one edge sitting proud of the other, even a little, means the two sides are no longer moving together. That is the single most useful sign that something under the slab, not just the concrete itself, has shifted.
Check 3: Watch it across a season
Mark both ends of the crack with a strip of painter's tape and the date, then check back after the next hard freeze-thaw stretch. A crack that has not visibly lengthened, widened, or gained offset in that time is stable, and stable cracks are the ones a filler or coating prep can handle permanently. A crack that has grown is telling you the cause is still active - fixing the surface before the underlying movement stops just buys you a repeat repair.
Where that leaves you
Passed all three - narrow, flat, stable? Treat it as cosmetic. Failed check 2 or 3? Get a professional opinion before spending money on a surface fix, cosmetic or otherwise.
Surface-level causes (the harmless kind)
Most Lake County garage cracks trace back to one of two things that have nothing to do with what is under the slab. Shrinkage happens as concrete cures - it loses volume slightly, and if the original pour did not have enough control joints to guide where that shrinkage happens, the slab finds its own line. That is the long, thin, dead-straight crack that has probably been there since the house was built. Crazing is different: a spiderweb of very fine surface-only lines from the top layer drying faster than the concrete below it during finishing. Neither weakens the slab structurally, and both are exactly what a good resurfacing or coating job is built to handle.
Under-the-slab causes (the kind that matter)
Two mechanisms account for nearly every crack that fails checks 2 or 3. Settling or heaving happens when the compacted base under the slab washes out, erodes, or frost-heaves unevenly, so sections of concrete are no longer supported the same way and move independently of each other. Sustained point load - jack stands left in one spot for years, a heavy cabinet or equipment base - can eventually exceed what a 4-6 inch residential slab was engineered to carry in that one spot, even though the same slab handles a parked car fine across its full footprint. Freeze-thaw deserves its own mention because it is less a cause than an amplifier: water and road-salt brine work into any existing crack, freeze, and expand, widening a hairline a little more every winter and pitting the surface around it. It rarely starts a crack on its own, but in Lake County it is the reason a crack you ignored for five years looks a lot worse than the one you first noticed.
The repair path, step by step
Once you know what you are dealing with, the fix escalates in a logical order rather than a fixed menu:
- Stable hairline, cosmetic only: a flexible filler seals it against water. It will eventually need a touch-up as it flexes, but it is a legitimate DIY starting point.
- Stable but wider, or you want it permanently gone: professional routing opens the crack slightly on purpose, cleans it out, then packs it with a semi-rigid polymer filler that ends up tougher than the concrete around it - the crack stops migrating and just stays shut.
- Surface pitted or scaled beyond a single crack: a cementitious overlay resurfaces the whole area, though the result is still bare concrete afterward and needs its own protection - see our sealer guide if you are stopping there, or weigh resurfacing against replacement if the damage is extensive.
- Confirmed movement under the slab: this is the one step where a surface fix is the wrong tool - address what is happening below before anything above it gets repaired.
